What is a Secular Carmelite

Secular Discalced Carmelites, also known as Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCDS), are lay members of the Carmelite Order who live according to the spirit and principles of the Discalced Carmelite tradition while remaining in their secular state of life.

Foundation

The Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites was established by St. Teresa of Ávila and St. John of the Cross, who reformed the Carmelite Order in the 16th century. The secular branch developed to allow laypeople to participate in the Carmelite spirituality and mission.

Prayer and Contemplation

Central to the Secular Discalced Carmelite life is a commitment to prayer and contemplation. Members are encouraged to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, practice mental prayer, and participate in the sacraments regularly.
